The Proposal (2025)

Welcome to My world!

Hi! I’m Vaneeza Shah, a filmmaker, writer, and all-around story obsessive based in New Jersey. I’m currently finishing my BFA in Filmmaking and studying Data Science at Rutgers University, which basically means I’m equally interested in emotions and structure (a very useful combination for making movies!)

I like making poetic, character-driven films about identity, femininity, and the quiet pressures that shape how we see ourselves. I love the small moments, rituals, contradictions, the things people don’t say out loud, and I’m always chasing stories that feel intimate, textured, and a little bit strange.

My junior thesis short, The Proposal (2025), screened at both the EB Indie Film Festival and the New Jersey Film Festival, which was such an exciting experience for me and an encouraging push to find the audience that connected with my work. So lovely to meet some of you!

Whether I’m directing, producing, or writing, I bring a mix of curiosity, discipline, and a healthy dose of “let’s figure this out.” I love collaborating with people who are passionate, thoughtful, and excited to build something meaningful.

Foundations is a warm, chaotic, darkly funny look at academic pressure and the quiet ways it shapes us.
The film follows Anya, a Pakistani-American architecture student trying to hold it together with little rituals, big expectations, and a calm face that’s starting to crack. As school, family, and ambition pile up, the pressure that built her might be the very thing that breaks her.

Bivalve: On the Half Shell

Currently in post-production, this 15-minute documentary is a love letter to Bivalve, New Jersey. Once the heart of the oyster industry, now a quiet harbor of memory and resilience. Weaving oral history, archival imagery, and community storytelling, the film explores what it means to preserve heritage in a place shaped by tides, toil, and time.
